TREE NURSERIES FOR REJUVENATING UGANDA’S REFUGEE SETTLEMENTS

For tens of thousands of refugees who flee conflicts from DR. Congo to Uganda, reach safely, but the next challenge is always the ability to continue feeding the family given the scarcity of reliable work opportunities. In 2018, LGLWYI entered into Partnership with ACTED Uganda to implement the above project in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement, which lasted for 18 months. This involved training and equipping of residents to establish tree nurseries to be managed by community groups comprised of male and female refugees. The community tree nurseries have had significant impact upon life in the settlement, with sales of trees providing income for residents and boosting local food security while improving the environment.
