Programs

At LIVE IN GREEN, we believe that environmental restoration, sustainable energy access, and community resilience are key to a dignified life, especially in refugee and host communities facing ecological and social challenges. Our programs are built on four core pillars designed to be inclusive, locally led, and impact-driven.

Ongoing Initiatives:

Clean Energy Solutions

Energy is more than a basic need, it is a foundation for health, security, and productivity. LIVE IN GREEN is pioneering clean, off-grid energy solutions tailored to the unique needs of vulnerable communities.

  • Eco-Green Stove & Energy Recovery Initiative:
This innovation delivers clean cooking solutions through locally fabricated micro gasification stoves and biomass pellets. These stoves reduce reliance on firewood, lower indoor air pollution, and create economic opportunities through pellet production and stove distribution.
  • Solar Induction & Cooling Solutions:
Weโ€™re developing and piloting solar induction cookers and solar-powered refrigerators in areas affected by load-shedding. These technologies are transforming energy access for restaurants, households, and small businesses across Kyaka II Refugee Settlement.
Ongoing Initiative:

Waste Management & Recycling

We transform waste into economic and environmental value. Our circular approach tackles poor waste disposal, promotes eco-entrepreneurship, and fosters cleaner communities.

  • Waste to Wealth โ€“ Recycling & Briquette Production:
This program converts organic waste into carbonized briquettes, an affordable, eco-friendly alternative to charcoal. Additionally, we recover plastics and e-waste for resale and upcycling. A dedicated team of women and youth leads our waste sorting, composting, and recycling activities in Kyaka II.
  • Integrated Waste & Energy Recovery Center:
Located in Bukere zone, this center sorts and repurposes waste streams into usable products like compost, briquettes, and copper elements for solar stoves, while offering jobs and training to refugees and host community members.
Ongoing Initiative

Agroecology & Sustainable Farming

We promote nature-based farming practices that regenerate soil, increase yields, and build climate resilience

  • Agroecology & Agroforestry Program:
We equip farmers and students with skills in grafting fruit trees, establishing woodlots, and preparing climate-smart nursery beds. This improves food security and restores biodiversity.
  • Nursery Preparation & Seedling Distribution:
LIVE IN GREEN supports the cultivation and distribution of fruit and indigenous tree seedlings to farmers, schools, and institutions, contributing to reforestation and income diversification.

School-Based Environmental Education (Launching 2025)

Environmental action begins with education. Our upcoming school-based program will integrate waste management, tree planting, and clean energy education into primary school curriculums. Through fun, hands-on activities, students will learn to sort waste, grow seedlings, and understand the role of renewable energy in daily life. Stay tuned as we roll out this transformative program across schools in refugee and host communities!

1. Promoting Peaceful Co-Existence Through Sustainable Energy and Agroforestry

๐Ÿ“… April 2017 โ€“ March 2020 ๐Ÿ’ก Funded by UNHCR Youth Initiative Fund This landmark project enhanced peaceful coexistence in Kyaka II by increasing access to sustainable energy and expanding green cover. We trained youth, set up a standard tree nursery, and distributed over 1.5 million seedlings to schools, churches, youth groups, NGOS, and farmers, laying the foundation for lasting environmental restoration and social cohesion.

2. Tree Nurseries for Rejuvenating Ugandaโ€™s Refugee Settlements

๐Ÿ“… 2018 (18 months) ๐Ÿค In partnership with ACTED Uganda Refugee communities were empowered to establish and manage community tree nurseries that boosted green cover, generated income, and supported food security. The nurseries are still operational and serve as a model for community-led environmental restoration. This project supports our ongoing contribution to Ugandaโ€™s Global Refugee Forum pledge to plant 7.5 million trees by 2027.

3. Entrepreneurship Skills Development for Refugee and Host Youth

๐Ÿ“… 2017 โ€“ 2019 ๐Ÿ’ผ Supported by UNHCR Through vocational training in soap-making and baking, this project enabled young people to launch small-scale enterprises and achieve self-reliance. Products like SOLAMU Sanitary Detergents and baked goods remain symbols of youth empowerment in Kyaka II.

4. Strengthening Resilience Through Local Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)

๐Ÿ“… 2019 โ€“ 2021 ๐ŸŒ Consortium: Oxfam, JESE, CSBAG & LIVE IN GREEN ๐Ÿ’ถ Funded by European Union Trust Fund This multi-district project strengthened land use planning, established 37.5 hectares of woodlots, and introduced energy-saving cooking technologies in Isingiro and Kyegegwa. It also trained 24 Natural Resource Committees, building long-term community capacity in environmental governance
